The Bible does have some far-fetched sounding stories. Here are three examples: 1. Did all mankind really begin in a garden with Adam and Eve? 2. Was there an actual flood that killed off all the humans and the land animals (except for those who were preserved in a big boat)? 3. Did Jonah really survive for three days in the stomach of a fish?

Are those accounts real, or are they just fictional tales? The answer to that question is crucial because the Bible says that these things did all actually happen. If they did not, though, then the Bible is not trustworthy. How could we trust anything else it said?

As you may have already guessed, I believe that all three of those events are real. In a minute I’ll tell you why I believe that. But first, let’s all agree that something doesn’t become real just because we believe that it is real. For example, sincerely believing that you can dance doesn’t mean that you can do it. Haven’t you seen somebody dancing in public who has NO sense of rhythm? Not a pretty sight, but evidently that person has great confidence in their ability to dance. By the way, you should be relieved to know I have never pretended that I have any dancing talent!

In this brief article, I’ll share just two important reasons why you should believe the Bible is true, even when it teaches something that seems to be humanly impossible.

The first reason is based on logic. If God exists (and that may be a topic for another article), then He can do anything. If all of existence begins with God, then there are no limits to what He can do. “For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), ‘I am the Lord, and there is none else’ ” (Isaiah 45:18).

Just because something is impossible for me or for you to do, doesn’t mean that God cannot do it. He is the One who has always existed. “Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You” (Jeremiah 32:17).

If you think about it, it’s arrogant to think that something is impossible just because we don’t know HOW it could be done. We have to be careful that we don’t make what we can do the standard of what can be done.

The point is that an all-powerful God can do whatever He wants to do. What about Adam and Eve, the flood, and Jonah and the fish? How can we know for sure that those things actually happened?

The proof that the three stories I mentioned are real is simple but powerful. Jesus said those stories are true, and we have good reason to trust what Jesus said. In a minute I’ll explain how we can know that Jesus always spoke the truth, but first, let’s listen to what Jesus said about these stories.

The book of Genesis explains that God “created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man

[or Mankind] in the day when they were created” (Genesis 5:2). When Jesus explained the basis for marriage, He referred to Adam and Eve, and He said that God “… created them from the beginning [and] made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4).

What about the Bible’s account of the flood? Jesus said, Just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man” (Luke 17:26).

Jesus also knew that the Bible’s description of Jonah and the fish was a real event. That is why He said, “just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40).

The point is that Jesus believed that those three events were real. That leads me to ask, Why can I trust what Jesus said?

Here is a simple answer to that question. Jesus accurately predicted His own execution and His resurrection: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again (Luke 18:31–33).

How does that prove what Jesus said is true? Think about it. Jesus knew ahead of time how He would die, and then He actually raised Himself from the dead, “… I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again ….” (John 10:17–18).

If Jesus had the power to raise Himself from the grave, how could I possibly doubt anything He ever said? Who else has ever demonstrated such power? That is why I am unashamed to declare that I am a follower of Jesus Christ.

What about you? Have you turned from your sins and embraced the all-powerful Christ? “For by [Jesus] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16). Are you afraid God couldn’t rescue you? Remember that, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
