It was way back in January of 1973 that the United States Supreme Court stepped into the abortion controversy and declared it legal. Today, 41 years later, the right to have an abortion has almost become sacred. Merle Hoffman, an abortion activist, proclaimed that “Abortion is as American as apple pie.” Those of us who oppose abortion are often labeled as being “anti-women” and unloving. The pro-abortion crowd goes so far as to fight any attempt to even educated pregnant women about the physical and emotional effects of having an abortion. Why?
The answer to that question is no mystery if you just follow the money. The truth is that abortion is big business. It brings in over $1.1 billion here in America alone. Some abortion doctors rake in as much as $2 million a year. But that is not all. Every aborted baby actually represents a potential triple profit. First, there is the cost of the abortions themselves, which is estimated at a half billion dollars a year by “Fortune” magazine. The individual cost goes from $350 to $1,000 per procedure. Then there is the sale of the aborted babies bodies. Lastly, money is also made when unsuspecting customers buy cosmetics that contain collagen from aborted babies.
The money being made through abortion is astronomical, especially when you factor in your tax money. As of this year, taxpayers have begun paying for abortion-producing drugs through the President’s so-called “Affordable Care Act,” and that is in addition to what we give to our country’s leading abortion provider, Planned Parenthood. They received $542 million of our tax money in 2012 alone. That is 11% more than the year before.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, goes on to explain that, “Planned Parenthood has spent much of the last few years demanding that taxpayers add millions more to their coffers, citing their non-profit status and so-called focus on women’s health. What have we received for our money? While government subsidies to Planned Parenthood have reached an all time high, so too has the number of lives ended by this profit-driven abortion business.”
When we see the money side of abortion, it explains why many on the pro-abortion side defend it so fiercely. Abortion is big business. A lot of people are getting rich by ending the lives of nearly two million unborn children every year in our country.
As horrific as abortion is, God holds out hope. What should we do? We should pray that our nation will turn away from this great evil. God is asking His followers to “… humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Almost everyone reading this article has had, or knows someone who has had, an abortion. There is no reason to despair. Murder, even of an innocent unborn baby, is a sin that can be forgiven. Jesus gave His life to pay for our sins, and when we repent and accept His forgiveness, He declares us innocent forever. If we will trust Christ then “…the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). When God forgives He “… will cast all This is message of hope to all who are involved in this heinous industry. For 41 years we have had government-approved, and even government-funded, sin. That doesn’t make it right, and it doesn’t heal the ache and regret that cripples the consciences of so many in our country. Jesus Christ is the only one who can bring help and healing for the hurting. We His people need to love those who are hurting, hold out the Gospel to them, and then do everything we can to stop the slaughter of our innocent, unborn children.
